Sociological approaches to analyzing naturally occurring interaction—i.e., human talk and behavior that is observed, audio-, or video- recorded. Topics include ethnomethodology, conversational analysis, and Goffmanian sociology.




Legal Interaction & Recordkeeping

The systematic study of the interactions involved in criminal case processing. Topics include police-civilian interaction, courtroom interaction, and law enforcement and court recordkeeping practices.




Social Psychology

The systematic study of the individual in a social context, including social interaction, motivation, attitudes, conformity, communication, leadership, personal relationships, and behavior in small groups.

Criminal Justice in America

Day-to-day functioning of the criminal justice system in the U.S. Nature of crime, theories about causes and solutions. Emphasis on the sociology of the criminal justice system—organization and roles of police, lawyers, court and correctional personnel.




Sociology of Race & Ethnicity

Study of inter-group relations, racism, discrimination, privilege, history of racial and ethnic minorities; analyzing challenges in economics, housing, politics, law, education, family, and health for US minorities.
